Day-long retreat with Santikaro The Emptiness Path of Insight Saturday, April 4, 2009
9:30 am - 4:00 pm Insight Meditation South Bay St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, Edwards Hall 2094 Grant Rd., Mountain View, CA 94040 Map The Shorter Discourse on Emptiness (MN 121) describes an approach to vipassana that mindfully integrates calmness and seeing clearly. Through gradual descents into emptiness, the practitioner begins to intuit the ultimate emptiness: everything is empty of lasting selfhood and inherent existence. The more this is realized, the more we let go of "me" and "mine." We will consider the implications of this overlooked practice, along with other emptiness teachings. Guided meditation exercises will foster an experiential approach to these powerful, original teachings. Participants should read the discourse before attending. Santikaro is the founder of Liberation Park, a modern American expression of Buddhist practice, study, and social responsibility located in rural southwestern Wisconsin. He lives there with his wife Jo Marie, various flora and fauna, and visiting friends, and continues to teach, explore nature, and translate the work of his teacher. Previously, he lived and trained as a monk at Suan Mokkh (Garden of Liberation) with Buddhadasa Bhikkhu, a leading Thai teacher and reformer of Theravada Buddhism. Ajahn Buddhadasa contributed enormously to fresh understandings of the liberating teachings of the Buddha that included intimacy with nature, the development of engaged buddhism, and a return to the original teachings of the Pali Canon with profound emphasis on the teachings of conditionality, emptiness, and mindfulness with breathing. These movements within Buddhism, initiated and nurtured by Ajahn Buddhadasa were unconventional in their time, and through the translations of Santikaro among others, came to influence our Western understanding of Buddhism. Santikaro returned to the Midwest in 2001 and retired from monastic life in 2004. Web sites: www.liberationpark.org Saturday, April 25, 2009
