The commentaries tell us that when the Buddha taught the Metta practice to the monks who were being harassed by tree spirits in the forest, the practice had the profound affect of creating good will and friendliness between the monks and the tree spirits. When we are faced with our own physical, mental or emotional difficult spirits or relationships, Metta practice can open our hearts and minds to be in greater concord with ourselves and others. Metta is often called a hymn of universal love.

This retreat day will be in silence and will include sitting, walking and movement practices focusing on deepening loving-kindness in our lives. Morning and afternoon sessions will incorporate a blend of these practices and teachings on Metta for greater integration. Movement will include Tai Chi and QiGong. Floor mats are not required for the movement practice.

IMSB relies entirely upon the generosity of participants to support our teachers and cover organizational expenses. Dana is a word in the ancient Pali language that describes donations, offerings and generosity. Two bowls will be available at an event to practice dana for the teacher and IMSB; we encourage you to give joyfully and generously, according to your resources and means.
